Skid rail blocks (also called skid refractory buttons) are the most heavily loaded refractory components inside steel reheating furnaces. They directly support and slide billets, blooms and slabs during heating, enduring simultaneous high temperature, abrasive friction and repeated thermal cycling. Many steel mills only compare the maximum service temperature when purchasing, which often leads to premature failure and unplanned furnace shutdown.
A qualified corundum skid rail block solution must match the actual furnace working conditions. Pure temperature rating is not enough. Before specification confirmation, furnace operators and metallurgical contractors need to collect the following field data:
1.Temperature profile of the skid zone: normal operating temperature, peak temperature and temperature fluctuation during start-up and shutdown. Most walking beam furnaces run at 1200–1350°C in soaking zones.
2.Mechanical load and contact mode: weight of steel stock, contact area, sliding frequency, impact from slab feeding. Heavy-load continuous sliding zones require higher cold crushing strength and bulk density.
3.Block geometry and interface drawing: mounting grooves, bolt holes, contact chamfers and matching dimensions with steel skid beams. Dimensional tolerance directly affects assembly and stress distribution.
Installation and expansion allowance: differential thermal expansion between corundum refractory and steel substrate must be reserved; insufficient gaps cause cracking and spalling under heat cycles.
4.Historical failure record: wear pattern, spalling, slag penetration, thermal shock cracks or edge chipping of old blocks.
Corundum-based skid rail blocks rely on high alumina matrix to deliver high hardness and abrasion resistance. However, performance varies greatly with raw material grade, sintering process, apparent porosity and bonding system. High-purity fused corundum formulations are preferred for heavy sliding contact; corundum‑mullite composite grades are selected when better thermal shock resistance is required.
At Shandong Luming , we review your working condition sheet and drawings before quotation, instead of selling standard blocks blindly. We supply precast corundum skid rail blocks tailored for pusher furnaces and walking beam reheating furnaces.
If you are replacing worn skid refractory or sourcing for new furnace revamping, send us your drawings, material requirements, annual tonnage and delivery port. Our refractory engineers will provide a matched technical proposal and commercial offer.
