Zircon Based Firebrick is a mainly composed of zircon mineral, which is natural silicate compounds of zirconium and silicon. Their chemical composition typically contains 65-67% ZrO₂ and 32-35% SiO₂. During brick manufacturing, appropriate amounts of binders and additives are added to improve their processing properties.
As a high-performance acidic refractory material, It is valued for their high melting point, slag resistance, low thermal expansion, and excellent thermal shock stability, making them essential in industries like glass, metallurgy, and chemicals.
Manufacturing Process
The production of zircon brick typically involves several key steps:
Raw Material Preparation
The main raw material is high-purity zircon sand or powder. Depending on product requirements, small amounts of other binders or additives, such as electrofused mullite, tabular alumina, chromite powder, magnesite, or refractory clay, may be added to adjust performance.
01
Batching and Mixing
Various raw materials are precisely batched and thoroughly mixed using mixing equipment to ensure uniform distribution of components.
02
Forming
The mixed slurry can be formed using different methods, common ones include:1).Wet Casting: Pouring the slurry into molds for shaping.
2).Pressing: Compressing the powder into brick blanks under high pressure.
03
Drying
The formed brick blanks need to be dried slowly and thoroughly to remove moisture, preventing cracking during the firing process.
04
Firing
After drying, the brick blanks are fired in tunnel kiln. The firing temperature is usually very high to promote sintering and densification between particles, forming a stable crystalline structure.

Characteristics of Zircon Block
High Melting Point
Melting point ranges from 2190–2430°C (varies with impurity content), capable of withstanding extreme high temperatures.
Strong Slag Resistance
Excellent resistance to acidic or neutral slag, particularly suitable for environments in contact with molten metal or glass.
Low Thermal Expansion
Thermal expansion coefficient at 20–1000°C is approximately 4.2×10⁻⁶/°C, ensuring good dimensional stability.
Thermal Conductivity
Decreases with increasing temperature, aiding in insulation and energy conservation.
High Load-Bearing Softening Temperature
Softening point under load typically exceeds 1550°C, capable of withstanding mechanical loads at high temperatures.
High Wear Resistance
Mohs hardness of 7–8, suitable for high-wear environments.
Good Thermal Shock Stability
Excellent resistance to thermal shock, adaptable to frequent temperature changes.
Chemical Stability
High resistance to acidic or neutral media corrosion, more stable in oxidizing atmospheres.
Bulk Density
Typically 3.6–4.3 g/cm³, with apparent porosity of ≤18%, offering high density and mechanical strength.
Main Applications
Due to their excellent refractory properties and chemical stability, zircon bricks are widely used in the following industries:
Glass Industry
Used in alkali-free glass and borosilicate glass kilns for furnace bottoms, Superstructure bricks, Hanger bricks, Gap-filling bricks, Forehearth channel bricks, Thermocouple protection bricks, and Inspection port bricks. Strong resistance to glass liquid corrosion, extending kiln service life.
01
Metallurgical Industry
Used in ladle linings, continuous casting nozzles, and silicon steel heating furnaces, resisting high-temperature molten metal and slag corrosion. Widely applied in continuous casting and vacuum degassing technologies.
02
Chemical Industry
Used as linings for reactors or pipelines requiring resistance to acid and alkali corrosion.
03
Other Fields
Cement kilns, CRT kilns, regenerator partition walls, petrochemical, steel smelting, military, and electronics industries, particularly in high-temperature, high-corrosion, or high-wear environments.
04
